The Arts License Plate

Despite the importance of the arts, California is 50th out of the 50 states in per capita arts funding. We spend about 12¢ per person. In contrast, the state of New York spends $2.58 and Massachusetts spends $1.96 per person. (National Assembly of State Arts Agencies).
If a million California cars had Arts License Plates, there would be $40 million for the arts in California.

Naked Awareness
Art Exhibit at ArtSpace
August 3 – September 4
Nude with Red Robe by Rod Williams
The nude human figure is one of the most enduring themes in the visual arts. As far back as prehistoric times, to Greek and Roman art, throughout the centuries, in every culture, the nude human form has been recreated in all artistic mediums.
The nude has been central in scientific, mythological, and allegorical themes. As a representation of beauty, the nude has been constructed and deconstructed in contemporary art. The nude human figure is a subject to which artist and viewer relate with familiarity. Naked Awareness comes to ArtSpace in August. Read more +
“Art Nude” is a term used to describe a piece of artwork in which the artist has used the naked human form. The term “figurenude” relates particularly to two-dimensional art pieces. In developing the image, some artists focus on the shapes created by the interplay of light and dark values on the surfaces of the body. Some artists may take an anatomical approach to create an accurate representation, while other artists may reconstruct the nude form in more abstract geometrical shapes or unreal colors.
Bronze Victoire Main by Sandy Allie As an art object, the human figure is not intentionally erotic. The purpose of figure drawing or sculpting is to depict the human form, male or female, of all ages, shapes, and ethnicities using line, texture, shape, and composition. Often contemporary artists choose human forms that are not typically beautiful, seeking to portray the nude body more realistically, while other artists prefer a more classical view of ideal proportion in regards to the human figure.
Naked Awareness is a month long art exhibit presented by El Dorado Arts Council ArtSpace from August 3 – Sept 4, 2010. This dynamic theme is inspired by the nude human form and its representation in art. El Dorado Arts Council ArtSpace will be hosting a lecture/slide show by sculptor Sandy Allie on the Nude in Art (7/24 @ 7pm); exhibiting sculptures, photography, and paintings by local artists of the nude; and EDAC Movie Night showing the documentary “Naked World” of the photography of Spencer Tunick (8/6 @ 6:30pm).
El Dorado Arts Council invites visitors to come appreciate the masterful art works exhibited in Naked Awareness. We are located at 459 Main Street
